he action was initiated by music label T-Series whose music catalogue was allegedly exploited by the website Guruji.com. Commenting on the arrest, T-Series VP digital content Neeraj Kalyan says, “Guruji.com was infringing our copyright under the garb of a search engine. The website was working in nexus with some music pirate websites and was exploiting our content.”
T-Series president- marketing media publishing (TV) Vinod Bhanushali states, “Guruji.com has been using our catalogue, the pirated website works on a non-investment model and used content from other pirate websites.”
Surfers searching music on Guruji.com are directed to a music player which has links to other pirate websites like Songs.pk, musicplug.in, pz10.com, bollymobile.in. So, is guruji.com which acts as a hub for these websites legally accountable? “Although the music player used to play content is based out of India but the company serving the content is based in India, it becomes a criminal offence,” adds Kalyan.
Post Guruji.com, T-Series would also be tracking down other pirate websites exploiting their content and initiating legal action against them.
In the past, the music label had initiated legal proceedings against websites like Youtube, Myspace.com, ibibo.com etc., the trial of which is on in civil courts. Talking about T-Series' efforts, Kalyan says, “Piracy requires constant action and our distribution and legal team would initiate action against infringers.”
In October 2009, Guruji.com was rated as the most preferred music search engine by JuxtConsult, the online market research company in India. Guruji.com started in 2006 and initiated its music serach engine in July 2008.
