Direct-to-Home operator TataSky has signed Bollywood superstar-producer-director Aamir Khan as its brand ambassador.

Aamir would feature in all TataSky brand and product communication, including advertisements in TV, print and radio, the DTH operator said in a statement in New Delhi Thursday.

Aamir had this to say: “I am delighted to be associated with TataSky. Since its launch, TataSky has redefined television viewing in India and I am proud to be associated with a brand that epitomizes continued innovation and excellence in home entertainment.”

Interestingly, TataSky's main rival Dish TV has Shahrukh Khan as its brand ambassador.

Speaking on Aamir's association with the group, TataSky CEO and Managing Director Vikram Kaushik said that the Bollywood star perfectly fits with the brand.

“Aamir fits correctly with the TataSky brand values of trust, high-quality entertainment and innovation. As our brand ambassador, he will be instrumental in communicating the benefits of TataSky to consumers across the country. It is our privilege to be associated with an actor of the highest caliber and excellent standing in the entertainment industry,” Kaushik said.

TataSky is the second largest DTH service provider, with a subscriber base of two million.

TataSky chief marketing officer Vikram Mehra spoke about this new development: “This is for the first time that we have roped in a brand ambassador. We have earlier used various Bollywood celebrities for different campaigns like Hrithik Roshan , Kiron Kher , Boman Irani and Paresh Rawal . But now with Aamir Khan, we have taken a long term strategic move.”

The timing is great as the two companies faces competition from upcoming players in this segment including Big TV and Bharti.

Not even the producer or director had anything to do with it. After she realised how much she had toned up (to play a male cricketer in Dil Bole Hadippa!), Rani just happened to discuss this idea with her designer friend Manish Malhotra. Talk about her ‘shapely’ success, and Rani says, “Believe me, I didn’t starve at all. I love my food, especially rice and sweets. There was no way I was giving up all that. So, I just worked out harder and was occasionally allowed my ‘cheat’ meals of rice, sweets, etc. ...
