Bollywood talks English

MUMBAI : Bollywood is finally doing what Amitabh Bachchan claimed to do in Namak Halal : it is talking English. And our stars, Mr Bachchan included, are loving it. Saif Ali Khan loved his Being Cyrus experience with Homi Adajania so much that he is keen to repeat the experiment if a script that is challenging enough comes his way. Preity Zinta is high on Heaven on Earth with Deepa Mehta, where she plays a battered housewife travelling from Canada to India. And the Big B himself has joined the English-bolta bandwagon in Rituparno Ghosh's The Last Lear, which is hitting theatres next week after wowing viewers at a film festival in Toronto earlier this year. Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV Motion Pictures explains the phenomenon : "The market for indigenous English movies with Bollywood actors is still nascent but the interest is rapidly growing.'' PVR Pictures head honcho Sanjiv Bijli, too, is kicked about this genre. His company has distributed Being Cyrus, Everybody

Tahaan Movie Review

Purav Bhandare , the central character in Santosh Sivan's TAHAAN , has elbowed Darsheel Safary, the child star of TAARE ZAMEEN PAR out of his top slot. There was no written confirmation about the fact that Darsheel was on top of the heap, but the fact the he now endorses so many products and is seen so often on television is a fair enough barometer. Bhandare goes one up. He has tremendous screen presence, is a fabulous actor and has brought alive the character of TAHAAN to endear himself to the viewer, just like Safary did in TZP. To put it in a nutshell, Bhandare is pure genius. Full marks to Sivan for entrusting this lad with the load of the film. But I suspect, like his character, Tahaan, where he is unknowingly being used by terrorists, Bhandare had no clue that he was the main protagonist of this film! Before venturing into direction, Santosh Sivan was an acclaimed cinematographer and this time he blends the experience from both fields to come up with a visually appealing a

‘Hijack’ a complete failure as a thriller

Film: “Hijack”; Cast: Shiney Ahuja, Esha Deol, K.K. Raina ; Director: Kunal Deshmukh; Rating: *Of all the films on the theme of terrorism, this one takes the ache. Painfully puerile and designed to put you off cinema on counter-terrorism forever, “ Hijack ” is a clumsy, amateurish take on all those slick airport-disaster Hollywood films like “Airport” and “Flightplan” that you’ve seen over the decades. The US gave us a wonderful film on the 9/11 tragedy called “United 93″, where we saw the trauma, pain and suffering of the hijacked passengers and their loved ones down below in extreme close-ups. In “Hijack”, the only suffering humanity is the audience who must bear debutant director Kunal Shivdasani’s clumsy efforts to take us dragging and kicking into disaster zone. All this flaky and feverish film gets out of us is a prolonged groan. Not one moment of the purported trauma gets to us…not even when the husband of a honeymooning bride is shot point blank by the caricatured terrorists

Salman Khan’s Veer

Salman Khan ’s upcoming movie Veer has been offered a grand amount of Rs 150 crores. The flick is set to create a new record in Bollywood, topping even other big movies like London Dreams, which has been sold for a whopping Rs 120 crores to Studio 18, or Hrithik Roshan’s Kites , which has fetched an equally mammoth amount of Rs 120 crores from Eros International. The reason why ‘Veer’ is being seen as such a hot proposition is because its story is written by Salman himself. The movie, directed by Anil Sharma , is a period drama starring Salman, his brother Sohail Khan and Mithun Chakraborty . Salman’s leading lady in the movie would be a debutante, who, it is rumoured, looks almost like Katrina Kaif . Sallu is creating history by getting this amount. The offer for this amount comes from a top production house of Bollywood . Salman has truly put all his efforts in multiple areas for this movie. Apart from playing the lead character, he has penned the film’s story as well as has t

Shahrukh wanted his show to be much bigger than Amitabh’s Unforgettable tour which has concluded recently and has gathered much accolades. To make the show bigger, he is all set to add big names to the show. The show has been badly effected as Katrina Kaif who is a big name in Bollywood has been discarded from the tour by Shahrukh following the ugly spat between him and Salman. Among other stars, Priyanka Chopra, Shahrukh’s good friend Arjun Rampal and Malaika Arora may join him on the tour. Temptation will kick start very soon and Shahrukh is gearing up for the tour.
