Bollywood to give voice to India's battered women

Bollywood is hoping to give thousands of battered women in India the courage to speak out through a new film on domestic violence.

"Mittal vs Mittal" narrates the story of a young woman -- regularly beaten by her in-laws and raped by her husband -- who fights back in a traditionally patriarchal society where it is still uncommon for wives to speak out against their husbands.

"It is the story of a girl who falls in love with a charming gentleman and marries him only to find his other self," said Rituparna Sengupta who plays the abused woman in the film.

According to a study by the United Nations, more than 60 percent of married women, aged between 15 and 49, are victims of beating, rape or forced sex by their husbands.

Last year, India for the first time formally recognised abuse in the home as a crime and introduced a new law to protect millions of women.

"The film calls on women to speak out and report if they are being subjected to domestic violence and not hide the abuse fearing what the society would say," said Sengupta.

"Mittal vs Mittal" is currently being shot and is due to be released in early 2008.

In town to shoot for an untitled film opposite Anushka Sharma, Shahid seems very comfortable in his skin. While he’s reluctant to discuss about his private life or his rumoured amours with Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan and Sania Mirza, the teen heartthrob says he’s “learnt to take all the rumours with a pinch of salt” and claims he’s just a “regular” young guy after pack-up. Excerpts from an exclusive interview: Kaminey and Dil Bole Hadippa... are set to hit the screens. Yeah. Their release dates are pretty close to each other. Kaminey will hit the screens this month, while Dil Bole Hadippa is slated for a September release. Both are very different films and I’m excited as well as a little nervous. The levels of expectations increase after your previous films have done well at the BO. Jab We Met was a turning point in my career. After Vivaah, I sat home for six ...
